Chronic Edema Management with Gina's Physical Therapy
Edema is the swelling of skin and organs due to an unhealthy buildup of fluid in the affected area. Edema will affect approximately 25-50% of patients who undergo axillary node surgery, but it can also be caused by swelling due to chronic venous insufficiency syndrome, post-operational recovery, or can even be hereditary.
What are the Consequences of Edema?
Edema can be painful and debilitating, resulting in impairment of the affected area, restricted joint movement, dry, taut skin, tissues becoming hard and fibrotic, resulting in restricted blood flow and oxygen, ultimately in neuropathy. Edema can also cause unpleasant, recurrent infections, blistering, and leakage leading to the development of serious wounds.
What can be done about edema?
Gina's Physical Therapy offers a combination of lymphatic massage as well as bandaging and compression using manual methods and compression pumps. All services are provided by our expert Physical Therapists.

Spinalution: A Resolution to Spinal Dysfunction
Are you tired of that constant, nagging pain in your back or neck???
Are you suffering from a burning sensation in your spine???
Tired of being stiff all of the time???
Are you experiencing numbness, tingling, or radiating pain in your spine or
extremeties???
Spinalution is for YOU!
Spinalution is a revolutionary new product available only at Gina’s Physical Therapy. Spinalution is not just a treatment for back and neck pain, it is a resolution for spinal dysfunction of all shapes and sizes.
Using a process that has been perfected over time by our expert Physical Therapists, we are confident that our method will give you the results you are seeking. Here's a brief description of what to expect...
Phase 1:
- Pain Relief. Using specialized techniques such as Strain Counter Strain, joint and muscular correction, and soft tissue mobilizations, our Physical Therapists will first rid you of your symptoms before getting to work on making sure they don't come back!
Phase 2:
- Gentle Exercise. Our goal is not to force you over the edge, but to help strengthen your body in areas necessary to keep your pain and symptoms from returning. Methods such as the Meeks Spine Program and other techniques, we will teach you to stretch and exercise properly. This is not a work out like you might expect, but is a gentle, relaxing session that will educate your muscles to move and work properly and pain free.
Phase 3:
- Prevention. After making the necessary corrections that will keep your body from suffering, it is important to find ways to make you independent. After advancing in stretching and exercising, you will receive important education on methods to be used at home after you have mastered the techniques learned here at Gina's Physical Therapy.
At Gina’s Physical Therapy, our goal is not to manage your pain, but to resolve it.
Spinalution is the answer.
Modalities
Ultrasound
Ultrasound therapy uses high energy sound waves (those above the range we hear) to help ease painful joints and muscles. These sound waves are transmitted to the surrounding tissue and vasculature. They penetrate the muscles to cause deep tissue/muscle warming. This promotes tissue relaxation and therefore is useful in treating muscle tightness and spasms. The warming effect of the sound waves also cause vessel vasodilatation and increase circulation to the area that assists in healing. The physical therapist can also adjust the frequency on the machine to use waves that will decrease inflammation.
Infrared Probe
Low-level infrared therapy is a type of low-energy laser that uses light in the infrared spectrum. The Anodyne Therapy System is a type of low-level infrared therapy, developed by Integrated Systems Physiology Inc. of Aurora, CO, that has been promoted for augmenting wound healing, for reversing the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in people with diabetes, and for treating lymphedema. The manufacturer states that the Anodyne Therapy System increases circulation and reduces pain by increasing the release of nitric oxide.
Electric Stimulation
Electric Stimulation is a treatment modality utilized by physical therapists that uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. This contaction helps strengthen injured muscles and promotes healing.
Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis is a non-invasive method of propelling high concentrations of a charged substance, normally medication or bioactive agents, transdermally by repulsive electromotive force using a small electrical charge applied to an iontophoretic chamber containing a similarly charged active agent and its vehicle.
Manual Therapy
One form of Manual Therapy used is a technique called Strain-Counterstrain. This technique is a method
for reducing chronic and/or acute muscle spasm in different areas of the body. One advantage of this technique is its extreme gentleness to the patient. Another form of manual therapy used is called Muscle Energy Techniques. This technique is used to treat somatic dysfunction presenting as loss of range of motion secondary to muscular inhibition. There are several distinct techniques which include reciprocal inhibition, and post-isometric relaxation. Muscle Energy is an Active (requires patient utilization of force) Direct (engages the barrier) technique that promotes muscle relaxation by activating the gogli tendon reflex. It has also been proposed that temporary muscle fatigue blocks reflex-contraction thus allowing for an increase of range of motion to beyond the barrier. The purpose is to gain motion that is limited by restrictions of neuromuscular structures.
Neuropathy Treatment
Anodyne Therapy
11 Peer-reviewd studies involving over 4,000 patients have been published using comprehensive therapy intervention which includes
Anodyne Therapy- a new form of infrared photo energy that is cleared by the FDA to increase circulation and reduce pain. How does it work? Dr. Tom Burke, retired professor at the University of Colorado, explains the infrared light locally releases a molecule called nitric oxide. The Tom Burke,PhD Nobel Prize in 1998 was awarded for the discovery of the effects of nitric oxide on blood vessels. “The effects of the Anodyne Therapy System occur because it rapidly increases circulation, thus, reducing pain and helping to allow physical therapists to do what they do best – improve function and patients’ ability to walk and perform their daily activities.
Healthcare professionals continue to document the exciting results of this
therapy. Dr. Dale Carnegie, foot and ankle surgeon at Denver Health Medical Center reports, “I have used the Anodyne Therapy System since 1995 to treat several thousand patients with painful, circulatory problems in their feet and legs. We have seen improved pain and circulation within 12-24 treatments.” Neil Goldberg, MD, Endocrinologist and Associate Professor at UCLA states, “Anodyne Therapy has signi-ficantly improved my patients’ level of pain. My patients’ balance and gait has also improved with the comprehensive physical therapy program. This treatment has been a welcome adjunct to my therapeutic arsenal for patients with diabetes.”
Sway Meter
The SwayMeter , designed by Dr. Li, can be used as a diagnostic tool. It helps gather data about the patient's ability to maintain balance. The "Sway Suite" tests the amount of sway that a patient has in each of four conditions. Testing is done on a smooth surface with the eyes open and then with the eyes closed. The testing is repeated with the eyes open and then with the eyes closed on an uneven surface (foam). Once the data is gathered, the patient's numbers are compared to
normative values that have been previously gathered. In addition to aiding in the making of a diagnosis, and assessing severity; SwayMeter can be used to perform therapy. Using the limits of stability (LOS), as a guideline the patient can be exercised to a certain percentage of his or her LOS. As the person becomes more stable, that percentage can be increased to make the training sessions more difficult.
